Meet Sonia Barcelona: The Photographer Behind Photos 4 the People
If you've spent any time in Las Vegas's creative scene, there's a decent chance you've crossed paths with Sonia Barcelona — even if you didn't know it. Since 2017, she's been the one-woman operation behind Photos 4 the People, a portrait project that started small and personal and grew into something the whole city seems to know about.
An idea that started as a birthday favor
The origin story is almost accidental. Sonia wanted portraits of her friends for her own birthday one September — nothing more ambitious than that. But the idea kept going. What began as a single afternoon of photos turned into a recurring monthly portrait event, and eventually into a full photography business built on a simple premise: everyone deserves a good photo, not just people who can afford a studio session.
That accessibility is still the whole point. Photos 4 the People shoots portraits, events, food, and headshots — in a studio or right out on the street — and the work has been picked up by Forbes, VICE, Las Vegas Weekly, Desert Companion, and Afropunk along the way.
More than a photographer
What makes Sonia's story distinct in Vegas's creator scene is that photography is only half of it. She's also a musician, performing and recording under her own name, with music that's been featured on Netflix and shared airtime with acts like Japanese Breakfast and Imogen Heap. Born in Guam, raised by a Filipino mother and Mexican stepfather in North Las Vegas, she's talked openly about how that upbringing — including help selling goods at the Broadacres Flea Market as a kid — shaped the way she sees people now, camera in hand.
Two creative disciplines, one throughline: paying attention to people, and making them feel comfortable enough to be seen.
Why she's on Nevada Creators
Sonia is exactly the kind of creator this directory exists to make more visible — not a large agency, not a studio with a dozen staff, just one person who found a way to turn a birthday idea into a decade-long body of work that the city keeps recognizing. She's currently listed as Open to Brand Deals, so if her work resonates, reaching out is the whole point.
